Scrambling to find something to put up for Monday I pulled out this figure study from my SVA days and scanned it.oil on masonite, 11"x19" 1999?
I remember that this model kept nodding off to sleep and at some point some students were pretty irritated. One in particular yelled at him so the model just quietly said, "I feel sick." got up, threw on clothes and walked out.

I just got back to NYC from my wonderful vacation in Los Angeles. Thanks to everyone everywhere. I didn't take any photos while there and am bummed about that because a lot happened. I have a new print that will go up tomorrow, Tuesday, December 13th. 3pm East Coast Time.
In an ongoing attempt to give personality and will to inanimate objects, we have here a noble mother and son balloon. I imagined the nervous little balloon being taken to his first day of school and this frames their procession in the sky. A bigger edition than the Drifter's print from October, but its the same 16"x20" size. Its called The First Day.

Lots of changes going on over on my end, though nothings been happening on my blog. I am sorry and will remedy that now. My upcoming January show at Thinkspace Gallery is underway, lots of time-lapses and other stuff queued up.

I haven't posted anything yet, but I have a twitter @poisonousbirds set up. Most likely my first one will be when I update my store section.

On a side note, because twitter has so many accounts. I wasn't the least bit surprised about @esao, @esaoa, @esaonet being taken. But @esaoandrews too? But what is peculiar is that my email address was already registered by a Myar Mohammed which I had to reset the password and take it back.
..So many people in the world..

Here's a sketchbook drawing of Clare Bare from our impromptu day at the seaport.

The notes on the left side are about how I was looking at the page at an angle with it flat on the table, so everything at the top of the page(which is angled further away) was drawn larger. Screwing up proportions.

I Did a book jacket for Kenny Klein last winter and the book is out now. Published by Llewellyn, you can see the summary HERE

My initial reference was based on Nancy Ekholm Burkert's version of the Brother's Grimm Snow White on the left. But my first sketch(right), was too innocent looking for the book.

The final being older and seductive with more of a Megan Fox thing going than a Lucy Pevensie.

For Vertigo.

This one is a combination of oil painting, photography and watercolor.

The sketches are all pretty similar, the art direction was pretty much the character, Lotus, melting as horrifying as possible while tying in the House and the pages from a book.

The very "Crypt Keeper" looking sketches are described as:
1. Lotus melting, holding stack of pages, also smoke is coming off her head.
2. This was the green light. Clawing at her melting face, Shelly thought it'd be nice to hide the House in the facial mess. Pages covered in blood frame the face.
3. The House in the background, white and almost silhouetted while crumbling away into loose book pages.
4. Giant Lotus melting blood over the House.

The final was a Photoshopped combination of the actual script, sprayed with water, crumbled up and photographed, some watercolor flicked onto paper, and an oil painting on masonite 9"x14".

Found it on some Italian news site and no I don't speak Italian.

Here's my cover for Vertigo's House of Mystery #39.

The art direction was that the character named G.G. be nude and crouching like a golden Gargoyle in the rain. An excited look on her face as if she never felt rain before. Spooky setting.

I potted this basil plant with mini balsa home for Clare Bare's birthday.

While working on it I found an itunes station called YESTERDAY USA RADIO which streams radioplays of "Have Gun, Will Travel", "Gunsmoke", "The Lone Ranger", "Twilight Zone" etc...Great for a couple episodes if you are into audio stories...

Here's the cover I did for Vertigo's "House of Mystery" issue 30.

12"x18" oil on panel with digital help.
A flame was added using the magic of Photoshop to subdue some of the ribbons. I personally like its ribbon-ness, but since another DC title was coming out this month with an unraveling mummy. Thats too many cloth-strip references for a month.
Original and sketches here.

A lot of sketches were done for this issue, the old timey ones along the bottom were sketched up based off one of the first summaries of the story arc. So many months went by that the story had changed in the final script. So a newer, technicolor batch was doodled up.

I haven't written about it really, but I've been working on a show all year for Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC and am wrapping it up. This will definitely be my biggest show and its all new work 'cept for the Blue Sky Noise painting which will be there too.

I've been making breakfast burritos at home now that Relish has closed.
Spotted this Siamese flower on their fence a few weeks ago.

I went back the next day and someone had plucked it. I'm glad I took the photos.

Not sure what kind of flowers they are, I'm sure something common.

House of Myster issue 26.
The upcoming story arc sounds really great. One thing that people might not think about is how far ahead the covers have to be done(in order to have an image for solicitations in catalogues etc..) So when an issue finally comes out, months have gone by. Often times I won't be sure what new characters will look like since the issue hasn't been drawn yet.

For instance, Fig, the main character whose sitting is wearing what she wore in issue 21.

Hello.
First, sorry I've been playing hookie the past few weeks, there's sort of an excuse at the bottom of this post...
But for the main meat, I'd like to say congrats and thanks to Circa Survive for having me do the artwork for their upcoming album Blue Sky Noise, being put out by Atlantic Records in April.

You can pre-order the album with a limited edition lithograph HERE. I'm NOT going to be putting any prints out myself so this is your only chance.

When I do a sketch I transfer the drawing onto wood. This is the Saral™ Transfer paper that I used for it, and a few other paintings. I like the way they look.

Now, there were so many consecutive "filler" posts that I became irritated by the quantity vs.(lack of)quality. I'm gonna continue the with Monday's from here on out though they may just be links to other artists, random experiments, or pictures of food etc.. A combination of streamlining my site and working on my neglected Youtube, and Flickr are still in the works.

So this is my last post of the year and my resolution of posting every Monday of 2009 was successful, barring that one post in August where I posted on Tuesday at 3am.

In the next few days I'll pin point what new resolution's I'll make for 2010.
My thoughts have become too intense and frustrated that I am deleting all of my news/science tabs and am looking forward to putting a deaf ear to world/local affairs for a while. Thats one of my resolutions for '10. Be mellow.

I got back from Arizona today and was able to haul back a giant portfolio of my high school and Jr. high artwork. Below are some really funny self-portraits...

Haven't worked in my sketchbook in months. I treated myself to a Bloody Mary at Blackout Bar while sketching up some bottles against the mirror.

The tasty garnish had a pepperoni cube, jack cheese, olives and celery. Sounds weird until you see it.

For this issue Matt Sturges wanted a twisted children's storybook look.

The description of the cover was pretty tight, so that is why my sketches look similar.

Here's what the painting looks like sans text.

Added the text, sunburst and saturated the colors a bit in ye ol' Photoshop.
Since the "House of Mystery" title goes on top, I put #22 down near the bottom (note pencil sketch above)

Based the color scheme from this 1947 Raggedy Ann Cartoon I had as a kid.

I like how everyone says "Halloween!" instead of "Happy Halloween!" in the cartoon.

Late last night I arrived back to NY from my exceptional time in Los Angeles.

The opening went awesome, I met some really nice people in the company of my west coast friends. Couldn't have been better.

Unfortunately this is one of the few photos I took at the opening. [note: I don't recall baseball players being there] Hopefully other peoples photos will pop up on the internet. It was a great turnout.

When I started doing the painting I was going for a classic/saintly pose, even though she was being strangled. I guess it doesn't really read that way with the composition being upside down and no halo. It was fun painting either way.

And here is the pencil sketch on an 11"x14" sheet of paper.

Several sketch ideas reveal that somebody is really pissed and annoyed.
